Associated Press PARIS Francois Furet, a historian whose groundbreaking approach to the French Revolution earned him an international reputation, has died at 70, his family said Monday. Furet died Sunday at a hospital in Toulouse, where he was transferred after falling while playing tennis in Saint-Pierre de Toirac, a small town in southwestern France. Witnesses to the July 8 fall said he banged his head on the hard tennis court. He quickly lost consciousness and never came out of a coma. Furet had been a professor at the University of Chicago since 1985.

He spent each autumn quarter as a member of its Committee on Social Thought. He was the first major historian in France to challenge orthodox Marxist interpretations of the French Revolution, which saw the 1789 upheaval as the result of a class struggle between the discontented bourgeoisie and the nobility. Furet also rejected traditional approaches to the study of history based on the accumulation of facts and minute details. His "conceptual" approach, combining philosophy and history, earned him disciples all over the world. "Furet was the world's leading historian of the revolution and transformed the study of it," said Ed Berenson, professor of Histo- In Loving Memory of ALICE CLARK who passed away July 15, 1992 I think of a loved one, gone to rest Because she was one of the Best No more talk and laughter Just a cluster of memories sprayed with a million tears.

A disillusioned member of the French Communist Party, Furet became a household name in France with "The Past of an Illusion: An Essay on the Idea of Communism in the 20th Century," published in 1995. It was the first major French work on communism in the 20th century and is considered to be one of the most authoritative studies on totalitarianism. Furet, who won numerous prizes for scholarly excellence over the years, was elected to the prestigious French Academy last year. Furet became the director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in 1966 and was its president from 1977 to 1984.

He first marriage ended in divorce. He leaves his second wife, Deborah, and two children, Antoine and Charlotte. Furet was to be buried in the town of Figeac in southwestern France in a private ceremony, French news media reported. In Joyful Memory JOHN I R.
