Eleanor Constantine her son died in his sleep at the Mayo Nursing and Convalescent Home, where he had been a patient for several years.
Mr. Constantine, a 6-foot-tall karate expert whose performance included one-hand pushups, was the official mascot of the Nittany Lions while he was student at Pennsylvania State University. As the Nittany Lion from 1978 to 1980, he said he was dedicated to giving the team and the crowd "the will to win" key games. After graduation in 1980, he went to work as a physical therapist and teacher er of martial arts for the handicapped at 1 the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Philadelphia. Friends and family say Mr.
Constantine already had begun aiding the handicapped while he was in college. "Nearly all of us are vulnerable to attack on the streets in these times," Mr. Constantine said in a 1981 interview, "but the disabled are especially vulnerable. What we try to do here is to make the odds a little more even for them." Two weeks later, Mr. Constantine left a party at a friend's house early in the morning and was unlocking the door to his car, which was parked on Port Royal Avenue near Henry Ave nue in the Roxborough section of the city.
He was struck by a car and thrown 35 feet down the street. The driver was never identified. The multiple injuries, including a broken leg and fractured skull, left Mr. Constantine in a coma and paralyzed. Though he eventually emerged from the coma, Mr.
Constantine never regained the ability to speak or write. Ironically, he became a patient in the same hospital, Moss Rehabilitation, where he once had been the instructor.
