18, 1996, following a life dedicated to serving the Lord, family, friends and community. The funeral will be 115 a.m. Saturday; at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William P. Thompson and Dr.

C. Robert Marsh officiating. Burial will with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. The family will, receive friends at the funeral home from 5:30 until 8 tonight.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 27, 1945, in Pensacola, Fla. She spent the early years of her life in Southern California before moving to Meridian, where she met and married O. Darrell Smith Sr.

They moved to Dothan in 1970 where Mrs. Smith was an active member of the community, serving on the Board of Girls, Dothan Service League and Wiregrass Sav-A-Life. She was a member of the Botanical Gardens Club and a certified Master Gardener. Mrs. Smith was a committed Christian, a member of the First Presbyterian Church and devoted much of her life to ministering and nurturing young people and families.

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, O. Darrell Smith Dothan; a son and daughterlaw, D.J. and Robin Smith, Washington, D.C.; a daughter and sonin-law, Heather and Jeff Jordan, Birmingham; a grandson, Christopher Jordan; her mother, Floreine Bakken, Dothan; her father and stepmother, Virgil and Marge Turner, Julian, a brother, Bill Turner, San Diego, Calif. Serving as active pallbearers will be Larry Athey, Steve Brown, Buddy Drewry, David Hewitt, Clay Howell and Lewis Shipp. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Session of First Presbyterian Church.

Jack Ray Cordell Jack Ray Cordell, 74, of 211 Aspen Circle, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1996, at the home of his daughter after an extended illness. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Saturday at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Arledge officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. At other times, the family will be at the home of his daughter, Gail Jewell, 211 Aspen Circle. Mr. Cordell was born June 8, 1922, in Oklahoma where he lived the early years of his life. He resided most of his adult life in Shreveport, La.

He was a pilot in World War II and was employed with Hav-A-Tampa Cigar Co. until his retirement. He moved to Dothan in 1990 and lived with his daughter and son-in-law until the time of his death. 17, 1996, in a Dothan hospital after an extended illness. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Newville Baptist Church with the Rev. Timothy Davis officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory with Holman-Headland Mortuary directing.

The body will be in the church one hour prior to the services. Mr. Boyd was born and reared in Headland but lived in Early County, before moving to Newville in 1953. Mr. Boyd was a member of Newville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was also a member of the Men's Bible Class.

He was a retired farmer. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alice Hatcher Boyd, Newville; two daughters and sonsin-law, Hazel and Johnny Kirkland, Dothan, Mary and Terry Walker, Columbia Rt. a son and -law, William and Jane Boyd, Cantonment, a sister, Veleta Morris, Dothan; four brothers, Russell Boyd and Barksdale Boyd, both of Pensacola, the Rev. "Tommy" Thomas PANAMA CITY Prominent businessman, civic and community leader, L.E. "Tommy" Thomas died in Panama City Tuesday at 11:45 p.m. after a sudden illness.

He was 71, well-known for his many business successes, for his great patriotism, and for his work for those less fortunate. A farm boy from "Rock-Rib" Republican country in upstate New York, he joined the Marine Corps on his 17th birthday. Servas a gunner in the Pacific campaigns of World War II, he was awarded five air medals and received the Purple Heart. After the war, the New York native returned to Birmingham, where he began his long career in the automotive business. He became a dealer at the age of 26 and when he retired owned and operated five dealerships in Alabama and Florida.

He served on the National Board of Directors for Salvation Army and received the highest award given by "the Army" in the United States. He recently established the Tommy Thomas Family Services Center in Panama City. He was a member of numerous civic and community organizations, a 33rd degree Mason, and a Paul Harris fellow. A lifelong Methodist, Thomas is widely known for his work in the Methodist Church and has served on many state boards including the Methodist Childrens' Home. His most recent project, the Mathison Retirement Center, was dedicated Sept.

18, 1996, and will continue as he wished. One of Thomas' favorite sayings was that "you'd better stand for you'll fall for anything." He embodied that philosophy as one of the founding members of the modern -day Republican Party in Alabama (in the 1950s). He was even called "Hoover" by many in the small Southern town where he operated his car dealership. After moving to Florida in 1965, he was elected Florida Republican Party Chairman from 1970-1974. Additionally, he was state chairman for President Nixon in 1972 and for President Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

He was the only living American to have cast Electoral College votes for four different Republican presidential candidates: Goldwater in 1964, Nixon in 1972, Reagan in 1980, and Bush in 1988. He was recently chosen as an elector for the upcoming election and was extremely proud of his individual participation of the Constitutional process of the Electoral College and looked forward to casting his next vote for his longtime friend, Bob Dole. Survivors include his three children: William E. Thomas, Tallahassee, Ginger Watkins, Atlanta, Carolyn Cramer and her husband, Bill Cramer, Panama City; nine grandchildren, Gibson T. Hess, Atlanta, William Thomas, Miami, Lindsey Thomas, Pensacola, Miles Watkins, Atlanta, Smith Watkins, Atlanta, Brooks Watkins, Atlanta, Emily Cramer, William Cramer III and Christopher Cramer, Panama City; one brother a and sister-inlaw, L.R.

and Frances Thomas; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jerry Davis, Woodhull, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Ricki Thomas, Anchorage, Alaska; six nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his friend and companion, Patti Woodham. The funeral will be 2 p.m. today in the First United Methodist Church. Dr.

Born Jan. 21, 1930, in Shaw, Mr. Griffin was the son of the late Wade Hamilton Griffin and Thelma Novella Jones Griffin of Florence, and the husband of Julia Ann Stevenson Griffin of Rt. 3, Abbeville. An area resident for the past four years and formerly of Dothan, Mr.

Griffin was retired as a customer service supervisor with Northwest Airlines in 1978 and was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church, near Abbeville. Survivors, other than his wife, include a son: Charles Norman "Chip" Griffin and his wife, Donna, Dothan; two sisters: Barbara Ann Bole, and her husband Billy, Killen, Irene Roebuck, and her husband J.B., Ft.
