Maj. Gen. E. James Graczyk, retired commander of the 4th Brigade of the New York Guard and former manager of national food advertising for The Buffalo News, died Wednesday (Oct. 7, 1992) in his Elma home.

He was 61 and had been ill for more than two years. One of just a few New York Guard major generals in the state at his death, Graczyk served both the state military and The News for more than four decades. He held New York's Conspicuous Service Medal for his military performance above and beyond the call of duty, as well as the state's Long and Faithful Service Medal for more than 40 years of outstanding military service. Conspicuous in person as well, he was a big, friendly man who drove big cars. One, a 1988 Cadillac, bears the New York license as Graczyk was the fourthranking Guard general in the state.

Another, a 1938 Buick that is a replica of Gen. John Pershing's staff car, has a license that reads "THE GENERAL." A third, a 1969 Buick convertible, sports the license "GEN. Graczyk joined both the Guard and The News in 1948 starting at the bottom rungs of both their ladders. He went into the Army National Guard as a private in the 106th Field Artillery of the 27th Division. He was hired by The News as a copy boy the business office, running errands and, in the early days, driving his business office bosses to lunch at the Buffalo Athletic Club.

He liked to tell of the first time he drove Mrs. Edward H. Butler wife of the publisher, to lunch because her chauffeur had the day off. "It was snowing, raining, sleeting. I drove her up on the sidewalk of the BAC so she wouldn't get wet," he said.

After that, for six months in the early 1950s, Graczyk chauffeured both Mr. and Mrs. Butler, who to became publisher at her husband's death in 1956. Graczyk was next assigned to The News proof desk, in charge of sending out advertising mats and cuts (pictures) and picking up copy. From there he went to national advertising "when everything was still metal and paper." When there was "a lull," he would take the ad director's Cadillac, calling "cold" on individuals in the phone book who were not advertisers, and frequently returning with new accounts.

His initiative, although unauthorized, brought him a promotion to sales representative. In time, he climbed to manager of national food, advocacy, law enforcement, military and political advertising for The News. He became known for turning down, certain ads for example, Hustler magazine owner Larry Flynt. He once drew pickets to The News when he refused to use advertising submitted by some lo- Maj. Gen.

E. James Graczyk cal opponents of the Vietnam War. "The buck stops here," he said in each case. When he received threats for refusing an ad, he recalled, "I would have people from the Sheriff's Department with me for a while. I have had a very interesting career." Graczyk, whose entire work career was at The News, retired In November 1990 as automotive sales representative in the advertising department.

His military career, with both the New York Army National Guard and New York Guard, saw him in every rank of the state military. He was deputy brigade commander as well as commander of the 74th Regiment and held numerous staff positions within the Guard. He received a second star from the New York Guard and was promoted to major general when he retired in January 1991. More than 200 people attended his retirement party in the Connecticut Street Armory in February 1991. He was secretary of Grocery Manufacturers Representatives and a member of Food Industry Sales Executives and the Frozen' Food Association.

He was a captain with the Erie, County Sheriff's Department's sci-1 entific staff and coordinator of the Sheriff's Department reserve unit. He also was a member of the Militia Association of New York, Judges and Police Conference, Badge and Shield Club and the: New York State Sheriffs Associa-: tion. "He was always there for us," said his daughter, E'Marie of El-1 ma. "No matter how many things he belonged to, he was always there."
